Real AI agent use cases, with sources and setup prompts

How to fix a printer that won't print with AI

Short answer: Give a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex a terminal on the computer that won't print, tell it the printer model and what happens, and ask it to diagnose before changing anything. Most failures are one of four things: the printer's IP address changed, a print job is stuck in the queue, the wrong or a broken driver is installed, or the computer is talking to an old copy of the printer. The fix is usually to clear the queue and re-add the printer as a driverless IPP printer (Windows' built-in IPP class driver, or CUPS 'everywhere' on Mac and Linux), which needs no vendor software. Microsoft stopped shipping new third-party printer drivers through Windows Update on January 15, 2026, so driverless printing is now the default path for most printers made since about 2015.

Real cases where an AI agent found that HP Smart had never installed a printer's drivers properly after 4 years, printed a family's worksheets overnight from a text, replaced a scanner app the maker abandoned and wrote a Linux scanner driver. 13 matching use cases below, each with a public source.

Windows: let Claude Code or Codex fix it in PowerShell

Covers 'printer offline', jobs stuck in the queue, and drivers that never installed right. About 15 minutes.

  1. Get the printer's IP address. On the printer's control panel, open the network or Wi-Fi menu and print a network configuration report, or read the IP from the screen. Write it down (the examples use 192.168.1.50).
  2. Start the agent in PowerShell. Open PowerShell (Start, type PowerShell). Install Claude Code with the official Windows installer, then start it. With Codex, run codex instead.
    powershell
    irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
    claude

Paste the "Diagnose before you touch anything" prompt below and include the printer model and IP.
  3. Let it run the read-only checks. These are the commands it should start with. They only read: which printers and drivers exist, which IP each port points at, what's in the queue and whether the printer answers on the IPP port (631).
    powershell
Get-Printer | Format-Table Name, PrinterStatus, PortName, DriverName -AutoSize
    Get-PrinterPort | Format-Table Name, PrinterHostAddress -AutoSize
Get-PrintJob -PrinterName "HP OfficeJet Pro 9010"
    Test-NetConnection 192.168.1.50 -Port 631

If Test-NetConnection fails, the problem is the network or the printer, not Windows. See the Wi-Fi guide linked below.
  4. Clear a stuck queue. In an administrator PowerShell, stop the Print Spooler, delete the stuck spool files and start it again. You can also cancel one job with Get-PrintJob -PrinterName "Name" | Remove-PrintJob.
    powershell
    Stop-Service -Name Spooler -Force
    Remove-Item -Path "$env:SystemRoot\System32\spool\PRINTERS\*" -Force
    Start-Service -Name Spooler
  5. Re-add the printer the clean way. If the port points at an old IP or a WSD port, or the driver is broken, add the printer again by IP. Driverless IPP first; -IppURL can't be combined with -DriverName or -PortName. If your printer only supports encrypted IPP, use ipps://192.168.1.50:443/ipp/print.
    powershell
    # Driverless (Windows IPP class driver). Use your printer's IP:
Add-Printer -Name "Office printer" -IppURL "http://192.168.1.50:631/ipp/print"

    # Or, if you need the maker's driver, by IP with a TCP/IP port:
    Get-PrinterDriver | Format-Table Name
    Add-PrinterPort -Name "IP_192.168.1.50" -PrinterHostAddress "192.168.1.50"
Add-Printer -Name "Office printer (vendor)" -PortName "IP_192.168.1.50" -DriverName "<exact name from Get-PrinterDriver>"

Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, then remove the old broken entry with Remove-Printer -Name "old name".
  6. Install a vendor driver only from the maker. If you need the maker's driver, download it from the maker's support site and install the .inf package, or use the HP app's Diagnose and Fix for HP printers.
    powershell
    pnputil /add-driver C:\Drivers\printer\*.inf /install

If your PC uses Windows protected print mode, third-party drivers are removed and only the inbox IPP driver works, so stick to driverless.

Mac or Linux: re-add it as a driverless CUPS printer

Macs and Linux PCs print through CUPS. Most printers made since about 2015 work with its built-in 'everywhere' driver, so no vendor software is needed.

  1. Start the agent in Terminal. Install Claude Code with the official script, then start it in your home folder and paste the "Diagnose before you touch anything" prompt.
    shell
    curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
    claude
  2. Find the printer and the queue. These read-only checks show what CUPS is set up to use and whether the printer is on the network.
    shell
lpstat -t # every printer, its device URI and queued jobs
lpinfo -v # printers CUPS can see (Linux; needs sudo)
ippfind # IPP printers on your network (Linux: cups-ipp-utils)
    dns-sd -B _ipp._tcp local. # same on a Mac (Ctrl+C to stop)
nc -vz 192.168.1.50 631 # can this computer reach the printer?

If the device URI in lpstat -t shows an old IP, or nc can't connect, that's your problem.
  3. Clear jobs and re-add it driverless. Remove the broken queue and add the printer again with the IPP Everywhere driver (CUPS admin docs). On a Mac you can also do this in System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
    shell
cancel -a # clear all stuck jobs
sudo lpadmin -x Office_printer # remove the old queue if it exists
    sudo lpadmin -p Office_printer -E -v ipp://192.168.1.50/ipp/print -m everywhere
lpoptions -d Office_printer # make it the default
    lp -d Office_printer /etc/hosts # print a test page

If a queue is stopped (lpstat says 'disabled'), start it with cupsenable Office_printer. For a very old printer without IPP, ask the agent to find a driver with lpinfo -m.
  4. HP printer on Linux. If you need scanning or HP-specific features, install HPLIP from your distro and run its setup and checker.
    shell
sudo apt install hplip # Debian/Ubuntu
    hp-setup -i 192.168.1.50
    hp-doctor
  5. Read the CUPS log if it still fails. Turn on debug logging, print once, then have the agent read the log and turn logging off again.
    shell
    sudo cupsctl --debug-logging
    lp -d Office_printer /etc/hosts
    # Linux: sudo tail -n 200 /var/log/cups/error_log
    # macOS: tail -n 200 /private/var/log/cups/error_log
    sudo cupsctl --no-debug-logging

Let an agent print things for you

Once the printer works, an agent can print for you. How depends on where the agent runs.

  1. Agent on the same computer. Claude Code or Codex can print a file with one command. Tell it which printer it may use and to ask before printing more than a few pages.
    shell
    # Mac / Linux
    lp -d Office_printer -n 1 worksheet.pdf

    # Windows (uses the default app for the file)
    Start-Process -FilePath "C:\Users\you\worksheet.pdf" -Verb Print
  2. Cloud agent (Grok Bot) with email-to-print. A cloud agent can't see your home network, so give it your printer's email address instead. Older HP printers use HP ePrint (an @hpeprint.com address; HP printers released after fall 2020 use Print Anywhere in the HP app instead). Epson printers use Epson Connect Email Print. Find the address on the printer's web services screen or in your HP or Epson account.
  3. Lock it to the agent's address. By default anyone who knows the address can print. In your HP account open ePrint Access and choose Allowed; in Epson Connect open Approved Senders List and choose Use Approved Senders List. Add only your own address and the agent's.
HP ePrint takes up to 10 attachments under 10 MB per email; Epson Email Print rejects attachments over 20 MB.
  4. Text it the job. Use the "Print the kids' worksheets every night" prompt below, or just ask Grok Bot to make a PDF and email it to the printer's address.

Copy-paste prompts

Written for this setup. Replace anything in [brackets] before you send it.

1. Diagnose before you touch anything

First prompt in Claude Code or Codex on the computer that won't print.

My printer won't print. Printer: [make and model]. Connection: [Wi-Fi / Ethernet / USB]. Its IP from the network report: [IP]. What happens: [e.g. says offline, jobs sit in the queue, prints garbage, nothing at all]. This computer: [Windows 11 / macOS / Linux distro].
First, only run read-only commands. Show me: every printer installed, the port or device URI each one uses, the driver, what's in the queue and whether this computer can reach the printer's IP on port 631.
Then tell me the most likely cause and the fix you propose. Don't delete, reinstall or change anything until I say yes.

2. Fix 'printer offline'

When the printer is on but the computer says offline.

The printer is on and connected to Wi-Fi, but [computer] says it's offline.
Compare the printer's current IP ([IP]) with the IP or port the printer entry uses. If they differ, or it uses a WSD or USB port, propose re-adding it by IP using the driverless IPP method for my OS.
Show me each command before you run it. After it works, tell me how to reserve this IP for the printer in my router so it doesn't happen again.

3. Clear a stuck print queue

Jobs won't print or won't cancel.

Jobs are stuck in the queue for [printer name] and won't cancel.
List the jobs first. Then clear them the safe way for my OS (on Windows: stop the Print Spooler, delete only the files in the spool PRINTERS folder, start it again; on Mac/Linux: cancel -a and cupsenable if the queue is disabled).
Print a one-page test afterwards and tell me if it went through.

4. Replace a broken or wrong driver

Prints garbage, missing options, or the maker's app never installed properly.

I think the driver for [printer] is broken: [symptom].
Tell me which driver it uses now and whether this printer supports driverless printing (IPP Everywhere or Mopria). If it does, add a new driverless entry next to the old one so I can test both.
If I need the maker's driver, find the official download page on [maker]'s own website and tell me the exact file to get. Don't download drivers from anywhere else, and don't disable any Windows security feature.

5. Print the kids' worksheets every night

For Grok Bot or a scheduled agent, after setting up email-to-print.

Every weekday at 8 PM, make two one-page PDF worksheets for tomorrow: one math worksheet for a [age]-year-old working on [topic] and one reading worksheet with a short passage and 5 questions. Put the answers on a separate page I can keep.
Email only the worksheet pages as PDF attachments to my printer at [printer email address], then text me what you sent.
Never print more than 4 pages in one day, and don't send anything else to that address.

6. Set up a new printer on every computer

New printer, or moving the old one to a new network.

I have a new [printer model] at IP [IP]. Set it up on this computer as a driverless IPP printer named "[name]" and make it the default.
Then write down the exact commands you used for Windows, Mac and Linux in a file called printer-setup.md, so I can repeat them on the other computers in the house.

7. Get a scanner working again

The printer prints but its scanner doesn't, or the scan app is abandoned.

The scanner on my [model] doesn't work on [OS]. Check whether the OS's built-in scanning (Windows Scan, Image Capture on Mac, or SANE on Linux with `scanimage -L`) can see it over the network or USB.
If it can't, tell me which official driver or package from the maker would add it. Only suggest writing our own tool if nothing official supports this scanner.

Run 40 Grok Bots through one chief bot for family, work and home

A non-coder talks to one bot, Jarvis, which runs about 40 others: it built a hide-and-seek game of his kitchen scanned in 3D for his kids, reconciles work expenses into Power Apps, runs his 3D printer, built his IT business site and its SEO, drafts email replies that wait for his OK, controls his TV and logs overtime in Notion. Coding goes through Claude and Codex CLIs on his own machines.

Common questions

How do you fix a printer that won't print with AI?
Give a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex a terminal on the computer that won't print, tell it the printer model and what happens, and ask it to diagnose before changing anything.
Can AI really fix a printer?
An AI coding agent can run the same checks a support technician would: find the printer on the network, read the print queue and spooler, see which driver and port are in use, and re-add the printer. One person below had Grok Bot find that HP's app had never installed his printer's drivers properly after almost 4 years of problems. It can't fix hardware faults like a paper jam, a dead fuser or an empty cartridge.
Why does my printer say offline when it's on?
Usually the printer got a new IP address from your router and the computer is still sending jobs to the old one, or the computer is set to a WSD or USB port that no longer works. Ask the agent to compare the printer's current IP (from its network report) with the port the computer uses, then re-add it by IP, and reserve that IP in your router so it doesn't change again.
Do I still need the printer maker's driver?
Most printers made in the last decade support IPP Everywhere or Mopria, so Windows, macOS and Linux can print to them with built-in drivers. Microsoft has stopped publishing new third-party drivers through Windows Update and, from July 1, 2026, Windows prefers its own IPP class driver when a printer supports it. Existing vendor drivers still install, and Microsoft says printers that work today will keep working.
Is it safe to let an agent run commands on my computer to fix this?
Use an agent that asks before each command (Claude Code and Codex do by default), keep the session to the printer problem, and tell it not to disable security features or download drivers from anywhere but the maker's own site. Never let it turn off Windows protections or install a driver package someone sent you.
How do I let an AI agent print things for me?
If the agent runs on your computer, it can print with one command (lp on Mac and Linux, or Start-Process -Verb Print on Windows). A cloud agent like Grok Bot can't see your home network, so use your printer's email-to-print address (HP ePrint on older HP models, Epson Email Print) and allow only the agent's email address to send jobs.
What about scanners?
Scanners are harder because many still need vendor software. People below had Codex write a replacement for a scanner app that never got an Apple Silicon version and had Claude Code write a Linux driver by watching the Windows driver's USB traffic. Try the built-in Windows Scan, macOS Image Capture or Linux Document Scanner app first.
Which AI tools do people use to fix a printer that won't print?
Across the 13 sourced use cases in this guide, the most used tools are Grok Bot, 3D printer, Claude Code, Hermes Agent, OpenAI Codex.
How much does it cost to get started?
1 of the 13 use cases can start on a free plan. The most common paid starting price is $30/mo (5 use cases). Prices come from each tool's official pricing page.
How long does setup take?
1 of the 13 use cases lists a setup time of an hour or less. Each card shows the setup time the builder reported.
Are these real examples?
Yes. Every use case links to its public source (an X post, a Hacker News thread or a GitHub repo) with the author and date, so you can check it yourself.
